PANTHERS TAKE PART IN BOBCAT RELAYS

March 7 (Orangefield) – The track team took part in the Orangefield Bobcat Relays Monday afternoon. The 7th grade finished with 47 team points while the 8th grade finished with 18 points. For the 7th grade Isaiah Watzlavik placed 6th in the Shot Put with a throw of 27’2. Jacob Costner took 6th in the Discus with a throw of 68’5.5. Jacob Scheiderer had a huge meet as he placed 4th in the Long Jump (14’10.5”), 1st in the Triple Jump (31’5”), 2nd in the 400m Dash (1:03.45), 3rd in the 200m Dash (27.21), and was on the 3rd place 4x400m Relay team. Dreyden Cook placed 5th in the 100m Dash, 6th in the 200m Dash, and was also on the 3rd place 4x400m Relay team. Sam Winn was 6th in the 100m Dash and a member of the 4x400m Relay team. Cazador Edgerton was the fourth member of the 4x400m Relay team. For the 8 grade Clayton Moore was 3rd in the Discus with a throw of 93’8” while Isaiah McMillion finished 5th with a throw of 87’8. Luke Levens placed 3rd in the Long Jump (16’1) and 4th in the Triple Jump (33’7).
TRACK HAS SOLID SHOWING AT LCM RELAYS
February 28 (LCM) – The track team had a solid meet Monday afternoon at the LCM Relays. 7th grade results are as follows. In the Field Events Sam Winn placed 3rd and Jacob Scheiderer took 4th. Isaiah Watzlavik placed 5th in the Shot Put while Randin Shomo took 4th in the Discus. In the Running Events the team of Sam Winn, Jacob Scheiderer, Dreyden Cook, and Ashton Fountain finished 3rd in the 4x100m Relay and the 4x200m Relay and 4th in the 4x400m Relay. Cazador Edgerton placed 5th in the 1600m Run.
8th Grade Results: Luke Levens took 4th in the Triple Jump and 5th place in the Long Jump. Clay Raney placed 5th in the Triple Jump and the team of Luke Levens, Spencer Boyle, Rylee James, and Jeffery Womack finished 6th in the 4x100m Relay.
PANTHERS BATTLE THROUGH WEATHER AT LUMBERTON RELAYS
February 23 (Lumberton) – The Panthers opened their track season Wednesday afternoon at the Lumberton Raiders Relays. It was a brutally cold and rainy meet but the Panthers battled through and managed to place in the following events: Seventh grader Sam Winn took 2nd in the Long Jump and the relay team of Winn, Jacob Scheiderer, Dreyden Cook, and Ashtin Fountain placed in all three relays. They took 4th in the 4x100, 4th in the 4x200, and 3rd in the 4x400. Eighth grader Luke Levens placed 4th in the Triple Jump and Isaac McMillion took 6th in the Discus.
FUN FOR ALL IN PANTHERS IN PRAYER FUNDRAISER
February 3 (MMS) – Coach Kim Huckaby and Panthers in Prayer hosted their annual Faculty vs Student Basketball game Thursday night. The 8th grade boys basketball team took on the coaches and staff with proceeds and donations benefiting 5k Ministries. As in the volleyball fundraiser earlier this year – the coaches and faculty came out victorious!

WOODS & PARTNER PICK UP BIG WIN
December 13 (Jasper) – MMS’s Isaac Woods (above right) and his partner Bradon Wilson (LC) tore it up on Lake Sam Rayburn this past weekend. The duo won first place in the Deep East Texas Tournament with an impressive 21.38 pounds of bass including the big bass (8.95) of the day. 8th grader Slade Nunnally & former Panther Trenton Marks (LCM Freshman) also finished in the top 10 with a 7th Place in the tournament held on Lake Sam Rayburn.
MMS PTO COMES THROUGH BIG TIME
The MMS PTO came through big again as they had the competition gym doors wrapped. Now when visitors and opposing teams enter the gym they will know they are entering the “Home of the Panthers”.
PANTHER HOOPS IMPROVING IN EARLY GAMES
The Panthers jumped right into basketball following the end of football. This year the Panthers have three teams with the 7th and 8th grade teams playing a regular season and the “B” team playing a a modified schedule. The “B” team has jumped out to a 1-1 start, splitting games with Little Cypress Christian Academy. The 7th and 8th grade played St. Anne to tip off the season and then played in the Port Neches Groves tournament against Groves and Lumberton. Both teams have showed steady inprovement in each game. The Panthers (7&8) will travel to Orangefield on Monday, December 13 and the “B” team will host LCCA on Thursday, December 16 at MMS.

PANTHER “B” PICKS UP WIN IN OPENER
November 30 – Coach Burke and the Panther “B” team tipped off the 2021-22 season with a 31-28 win over the Little Cypress Christian Academy Wolves Tuesday night. Ian Milam led the Panthers with 12 points in the win.
PANTHERS SHOOT AROUND OVER BREAK
November 23 (MMS) – Several players took time out of their Thanksgiving break to come up to the gym and get some time in on their game. Coach Strandberg and Coach McIlwain volunteered time from their break to open up the gym Tuesday afternoon for the players to have a “Shoot Around”.
FACULTY WINS FUNDRAISER VOLLEYBALL GAME
November 9 (MMS) – The MMS faculty outlasted the students 25-21 and 25-20. The Faculty-versus-Students volleyball game was sponsored by Panthers in Prayer. All proceeds from the game went to Operation Christmas Child.
WEIGHT ROOM GETS FACELIFT
Over the past year the fPanther ield house has come a long way. Tropical Storms last year damaged the roof and that resulted in a new roof. This year the inside has benefited from some major upgrades. The high school weight room was re-done over the summer and MMS received the weight stations and weights the Bears replaced. The coaches re-painted the locker room, lockers, and office and this past week a brand new rubber floor was installed in the weight room. BASKETBALL TRYOUTS SET
November 5 (MMS) – Basketball tryouts will begin on Monday and Tuesday of next week during the Athletic period only during regular time slot for your athlete. Wednesday and Thursday will be after school, 7th and 8th together until 5:45pm. Announcements of the teams will be Friday in Athletics. Athletic clothes and basketball shoes (tennis shoes if no basketball shoes yet) are required for tryouts. You must be in good standing with all eligibility rules per UIL in order to tryout. You must have a physical and RankOne completed as well (football boys this has already been done). You must be passing all of your classes also in order to tryout. – Coach Adam Strandberg

2021 PANTHERS PART OF SCHOOL HISTORY
November 4 (MMS) – The Panthers capped off one of their best seasons in many years Thursday night. For the last twenty-plus years MMS has played an independent football schedule and have never been part of a district. This year the Panthers played in 2A Region 3 District 12 along with Deweyville, Evadale, Burkeville, and Sabine Pass. Hull-Daisetta is also in the district but were not on the Panthers schedule. The Panthers opened the season with a win against the Bridge City 8B team before dropping close games to Evadale and Deweyville to open district play. Sitting at 1-2 and 0-2 in district, the team worked hard to improve and bounced back with four straight district wins including a huge win at Evadale. MMS fell to a tough St. Anne team in a non-district game before taking on Deweyville in the final game of the season. The Panthers stood at 5-3 overall and 4-2 in district play while Deweyville sat at 5-1 in district. A win would give the Pirates the outright district title while a Panther win would give MMS a share of the title. In a game that will be remembered for years to come, the Panthers clawed their way to a win with just under a minute left in the game. It was one of the biggest wins in history for the Panthers as it gave them something the school had never had – A part of a district title. That district title is now forever part of Mauriceville Panther Football history. The 2021 Panthers have a place next to the two back-to-back undefeated teams of the early 2000’s and the undefeated Panthers of 2009. It was a year that will not soon be forgotten!
PANTHERS EDGE PIRATES TO CLAIM SHARE OF DISTRICT TITLE
November 4 (MMS) - The Panthers hosted the Deweyville Pirates looking for revenge after an early season 16-14 district loss at Deweyville. A win would give the Pirates (5-1 in district) the outright 12-2A District title while a Panther win would give MMS (4-2 in district) a share of the title. The game started out fast as MMS jumped up 12-0 in the first behind touchdown runs by Dreyden Cook and Jeffrey Womack. The Pirates answered with a TD drive in the second quarter to make it a 12-8 Panther lead at the half. Deweyville took advantage of an opening second half onside kick and drove the endzone to grab a 16-14 lead. Another onside kick gave the Pirates great field position and a good shot to score to put the game away. A huge stand by the Panther defense gave the offense one last shot at re-taking the lead. The Panthers drove inside the Pirate 40-yard line before the Pirate defense forced a game deciding fourth down. With the season and a share of the schools first district on the line – a final timeout was called with 0:58 seconds left in the game to set up a miracle play on 4th-and-18. The offense lined up, the ball was snapped, and 47 yards later Jeffrey Womack became a hero for years to come as he crossed the goalline for a Panther touchdown. Now up 18-14 with 0:42 left, the Panther defense held and a final Pirate pass attempt fell incomplete as the clock hit zero. History had been made in a game that was one of the best games ever seen at Panther Field. The Panthers finished 2021 6-3, 5-2 and were part of a district title for the first time in school history!

November 1 (MMS) – The Panthers were treated to a team dinner by First Baptist Church of Mauriceville Monday night after practice. The team and coaches had all the BBQ and sides they could eat and also enjoyed a motivating message from youth pastor Tyler Ellison.
PANTHERS FALL TO TOUGH WILDCAT TEAM
October 28 (MMS) – The Panthers hosted the St. Anne Wildcats Thursday afternoon. It was a packed house as it was Mauriceville Youth Football and Cheer Night at the game. Many players and cheerleaders came out and did the pre-game run-though with Coach Strandberg and the Panthers. The game was a battle as the Panthers chewed up most of the first half only to have a costly fumble stop a drive deep in Wildcat territory. St. Anne managed a late second quarter touchdown and grabbed an 8-0 lead at the half. The second half saw the Wildcats grab the lone score of the half as they pulled out a 14-0 win. The loss was a non-district loss for the Panthers as they dropped to 5-3 overall. MMS (5-3, 4-2) will host the Deweyville Pirates in the final game of the season next Thursday at 5pm.
FOUR WINS IN A ROW FOR THE ‘VILLE
October 21 (Sabine Pass) – The Panthers took their three game district win streak on the road as they travelled to Sabine Pass to take on the Sharks. Behind another tremendous game from both the offense and defense, the Panthers came away with a 28-8 win and moved their win streak to four. Dreyden Cook put the Panthers up 6-0 on a first quarter touchdown run only to have the Sharks answer back with a touchdown and conversion to grab an 8-6 lead. From there on it was all Mauriceville as Sam Winn scored two touchdowns in the second quarter and the defense stepped up and shut down the Sharks. Up 20-6 late in the third, Jeffrey Womack put the game away as he went 68 yards to make it 28-6. The win puts the Panthers at 4-2 in district play and 5-2 overall. Next up will be a non-district match-up with the St. Anne Wildcats next Thursday at Panther Field.
PANTHERS PICK UP THIRD DISTRICT WIN IN A ROW
October 14 (MMS) – The Panthers returned home to Panther Field for the first time in three weeks and came away with a dominating 40-8 district win over the visiting Burkeville Mustangs. The offense rolled up solid numbers on the ground and through the air. The Panthers found the endzone five times converted on all five two-point conversions. Dreyden Cook, Sam Winn, and Ashtin Fountain each rushed for one TD while quarterback Clay Raney rushed for one TD and passed for one to brother Jake Raney. Cook had three two-point conversions, Fountain had one conversion, and Cazador Edgerton ran in the final conversion. The Panther defense played an error free/penalty free four quarters allowing just one lone fourth quarter touchdown to the Mustangs. Bryce Busby and Clay Moore locked down the run game up the middle while linebackers Ethan Pope, Isaiah Watzlavik, Winn, and the secondary had one of their best “team defense” games of the season. The Panthers (4-2, 3-2) will hit the road for their last away game of the season next Thursday when they travel to Sabine Pass to take on the Sharks at 5pm.
PANTHERS WIN AGAIN – GET REVENGE ON REBELS
October 7 (Evadale) – The Panthers travelled to Evadale Thursday afternoon looking for revenge after the Rebels eaked out an 8-0 district win early in the season at Mauriceville. The Panthers waisted little time as they jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. Evadale would find the endzone late in the half to cut it to a 14-8 Mauriceville lead. The second half was all Panthers as they put up two more scores to cruise to a 28-8 win. Dreyden Cook and Sam Winn pounded the Rebel defense all afternoon as Cook rumbled for over 150 yards and 3 touchdowns while Winn went for over 80 yards and a touchdown. Winn also connected with Jake Raney on a 47 yard pass late in the second quarter. The “O” line, led by standout game from Bryce Busby, did a tremendous job opening holes for Cook and Winn. The Panther defense played another solid game as they held the Rebels running and passing game in check. Ashtin Fountain had two huge interceptions and Clay Raney also pulled in an interception late in the second half. The win moves Mauriceville to 2-2 in district play and 3-2 overall. MMS will look to win their third in a row when they host the Burkeville Mustangs next Thursday at 5:30.
PANTHERS GET BIG DISTRICT ROAD WIN
September 30 (Burkeville) – The Panthers picked up a big district road win Thursday afternoon as they downed the Burkeville Mustangs 20-6. Dreyden Cook had two first quarter touchdown runs and Sam Winn had a late second quarter TD run behind the solid blocking of Odes Gordan, Isaac Woods, Riley James, Luke Scott, Isaiah Watzlavik, and tight end Jeffrey Womack. Watzlavik also had a huge game on special teams as he averaged over 40 yards a kick on kickoffs. The defense held the Mustangs scoreless in the first half. Clayton Moore, Bryce Busby, Dayton Sterling, Cazador Edgerton, and Ethan Pope all had a tremendous game. Defensive back Sam Barnes had the defensive play of the game as he had a big interception lat in the first half. The second half saw the second team see a majority of the playing time and keep Burkeville to a loan fourth quarter score and secure the win. The Panthers (2-2, 1-2) will be on the road again next Thursday at Evadale.
PANTHERS EDGED BY PIRATES
September 23 (Deweyville) - The Panthers travelled to Deweyville Thursday afternoon for their first road game of the season. MMS jumped out 8-0 as Sam Winn (above #12) capped off a solid opening drive with a 10 yard touchdown run and Dreyden Cook (above #44) rumbled in for the 2-point conversion. After the defense held the Pirates on their first possession, Winn found the endzone again for a 62 yard touchdown to put the Panthers up 14-0. Deweyville would take advantage of a big kickoff return and would drive to a late second quarter touchdown cutting the Panthers lead to 14-6. Deweyville got the opening kickoff of the second half and would slowly move down the field and eat up the entire quarter. The Pirate possession went into the fourth quarter and ended with a touchdown and 2-point conversion that gave them a 16-14 lead. The Panthers moved the ball inside Pirate territory on two quick plays but a costly fumble would end the drive. Deweyville managed to run the clock out with another clock-eating drive to come away with the win. The loss drops MMS to 0-2 in district play and 1-2 overall on the season. The Panthers will look to get back in the win column when they travel to Burkeville next Thursday to play the Mustangs.
FBCM HAS ANNUAL POST-PRACTICE VISIT
In what has become a yearly tradition, members of First Baptist Church-Mauriceville came out after a hot practice to treat the team to cold drinks, snacks, and a motivational message.
PANTHERS FALL IN TIGHT GAME WITH REBELS
September 16 (MMS) – The Panthers hit the field Thursday afternoon despite a week that saw Hurricane Nicholas keep them from practicing and even attending school on Tuesday. Coming off a week one win, the Panthers welcomed the Evadale Rebels to Panther Field to kick off district play. Both teams struggled to move the ball in the first half and the Panthers couldn’t take advantage of two Rebel turnovers. Dreyden Cook came up with a fumble recovery early in the first quarter and Jake Raney ended another Rebel drive late in the half with an interception. The game remained scoreless until Evadale found the endzone midway through the fourth quarter and converted the two-point conversion to go up 8-0. MMS seemed to have an answer as they drove inside the Rebel redzone but couldn’t convert as they turned the ball over on downs with just over a minute left in the game. Evadale took over and ran the clock out for an 8-0 win. The Panthers (1-1,0-1) will go back to work and hit the road next Thursday for a match-up with the Deweyville Pirates.
FOOTBALL BENEFITS FROM IP GRANT
Thanks to a grant from International Paper, the Panther football team was able to purchase new pads and a two-man blocking sled. All of the Panthers equipment was lost in hurricanes Harvey and Imelda. IP came through big and the team will definitely benefit from the grant.
PANTHERS OPEN SEASON WITH BIG WIN
September 9 (MMS) – For the first time since 2018 the Panthers played a home game in Mauriceville. Storms and COVID have forced “home” games to be played at LCM’s Battlin’ Bear Stadium the past three years. The Panthers took full advantage of the opportunity as they welcomed the Bridge CIty Cardinals 8B team to Panther Field. Dreyden Cook got the Panthers on the board early in the first quarter with a 26 yard touchdown run to make it 6-0. Clay Raney came through on the next Cardinal possession with a big interception to set the Panthers up deep in BC territory. Raney, also the starting quarterback, took advantage and connected with Cook for an 18 yard touchdown pass (Raney ran in the 2-point conversion) to put the Panthers up 14-0. The defense, led by linebackers Sam Winn and Ethan Pope, would keep the Cardinals out of the endzone on a late drive and kept the lead to 14-0 going into halftime. Clay Raney and Dreyden Cook brought the fans to their feet once again as Raney hit Cook for an 87 yard TD pass on the first play of the third quarter to make it 20-0. The Panther defense played solid in the second half as they forced three BC turnovers. Isaiah Watzlavik had a forced fumble while Pope and Isaac McMillion each had a fumble recovery. The third turnover came on a Jake Raney interception late in the fourth quarter that sealed a 20-6 win for the Panthers. The Panthers (1-0) will host the Evadale Rebels next Thursday at 5pm.

Adam Strandberg returns for his second year as Athletic Coordinator at MMS. Strandberg is the Head Coach for Football, Basketball, and Track. Aaron Burke is back for his 26 year at Mauriceville and is an assistant for all Football, Basketball, and Track. Collin Foster is in his second year at Mauriceville and will an assistant for Football and Track. Cameron McIlwain, a Lamar University student, is volunteering again this year coaching Football, Basketball, and Track.

August 20 (LCM) – It was a great turnout for the return of “Meet the Bears” Friday afternoon at Battlin’ Bear Stadium. LCM Athletic Director/Head Football Coach Eric Peevey and the entire LCM Coaching Staff introduced the 2021-22 athletes and cheerleaders from LCM High School, LCJH, and MMS. FORMER PANTHERS SHINE IN BEARS SCRIMMAGE
August 19 (LCM) – Former Panthers Jacob Burman (above Lt) and Jarvis Riley (above Rt) each had big plays in the LCM Bears varsity scrimmage win over the Bridge City Cardinals. Burman had a huge interception while Riley had a forced fumble and fumble recovery in the Bears 34-0 victory.
STRANDBERG HOSTS PARENT MEETING
August 12 (Field House) – Coach Adam Strandberg and his staff held their annual parent meeting Thursday afternoon following Meet the Teacher. General information, rules, expectations, calenders, and schedules were some of the topics of the meeting. The parents and athletes also got to see the improvements made to the weight room and locker room over the summer.
